5 Necessary Settings After Installing WordPress

As we all know that WordPress is the best CMS for the personal blog. There are numerous websites and blog that are build via WordPress. If you are a beginner in the blogging world, then there must be many problems that you may face in blogging world. But, you should not worry about these such things. If you are new to WordPress, there are some steps that you must follow which are necessary for your WordPress blog just after installing WordPress on your domain.

Necessary Settings After Installing WordPress

1. GENERAL SETTINGS :

These are the general settings that should must change instantly for the branding of your blog.

Site Title : You should change the site title of your blog. It is written “yoursite.com” in that box. Instead of this, you should change the name as “Your Site”. For Example : “facebook.com” is replaced as “Facebook”. My blog’s name is “Grove Times” instead of “grovetimes.com”. Similarly, get one name for your blog.

Tagline : It is basically the slogan for your blog that suits your blog.

WordPress Address (URL) : It should be written as “http://yoursite.com

Site Address (URL) : Make it same as WordPress Address (URL)

E-mail Address : Update your existing and working e-mail address in which you updates about blog comments and other details.

Membership : Uncheck the box of Anyone can register, I am saying this because there is no such point in offering registration unless or until you are not providing any product or service.

Timezone : Set your timezone according to UTC time. After you set your timezone and save changes, make sure your local time is correct. For India, its UTC+5:30

Date Format : Choose by your own, I don’t think that you need any help. But for the best use, I have selected the first one that is according today’s date.

Time Format : I have selected the first option. You can select by your own.

Week Starts On : Mine is Monday. You have full freedom to choose according to your requirement. According to visitors, you must choose Sunday or Monday. Rest depends on you.

2. DISCUSSION SETTINGS :

Default Article Settings : Select all the points for the better use of your WordPress blog. But you can unselect the third one that is (C) according to your requirement.

(A) Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
(B) Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
(C) Allow people to post comments on new articles

Other Comment Settings : I have selected the (A) and (D) and I advice you to check these points only.

(A) Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
(B) Users must be registered and logged in to comment
(C) Automatically close comments on articles older than “x” days
(D) Enable threaded comments (nested) comments “5″ levels deep
(E) Break comments into pages with “x” top level comments per page and the “last” page displayed by default. Comment should be displayed with the “older” comments at the top of each page

E-mail me whenever : Select both of them (A) and (B). This is to be done for improving your blog’s performance.
(A) Anyone posts a comment
(B) A comment is held for moderation

Before a comment appears : Select (B) and Uncheck (A).
(A) An administrator must always approve the comment
(B) Comment author must have a previously approved comment

AVATARS : An avatar is an image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when your comment is published on a particular website.

Avatar Display : Show Avatars

Maximum Rating : G – Suitable for all audiences

Default Avatar : You can choose any custom avatar available from Mystery Man, Blank, Gravatar Logo, Identicon (Generated), Wavatar (Generated), MonsterID (Generated), Retro (Generated). That’s all your choice.

3. MEDIA SETTINGS :

These are the settings to be done for your media files.

Image Sizes :
(A) Thumbnail size : Width = 150 , Width = 150
Select this one – Crop thumbnail to extend dimensions
(B) Medium size : Max Width = 300, Max Height = 300
(C) Large size : Max Width = 1024, Max Height = 1024

Embeds :
Auto-embeds : Check this point for your settings that is – When possible, embed the media content from a URL directly
onto the page. For example : links to Flickr and YouTube
Maximum embed size : Width must be left blank for the default width adjustment of your theme, Height = 600

Uploading Files :
Store uploads in this folder : For the best results, leave this blank and that will be set as Default (wp-content/uploads)

Full URL path to files : It is optional so better leave it blank too.

4. PRIVACY SETTINGS :

Site Visibility : It should be set as “Allow search engines to index this site” to improve the Google ranking of your blog.

5. PERMALINKS SETTINGS :

It is the official link of your blog’s post.

Common Settings : You can choose any type except the default one. I have a selected (C) option.
(A) Default
(B) Day and name
(C) Month and name
(D) Numeric
(E) Post name
(F) Custom Structure
*** For Custom Structure fill ” /%postname%.html ” for best optimization of your blog.

These are the necessary settings that everyone should follow after installing WordPress.
